Shortland Chambers is delighted to announce that David Cooper and Bronwyn Carruthers have been appointed King’s Counsel.
David Cooper graduated from the University of Auckland in 1991 with an LLB (Hons) and was admitted to the Bar later that year. He joined Bell Gully’s litigation department before continuing his studies at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a PhD in law in 1996. During this time, he spent a year teaching at the University of Chicago Law School as a Bigelow Teaching Fellow. Dr Cooper returned to Bell Gully in 1996 and joined the partnership as Litigation Partner in 2003. In 2017 he joined Shortland Chambers as a Barrister, continuing his general civil litigation practice. Dr Cooper co-authored Corporate Law in New Zealand and is a Convenor of a Law Society Standards Committee.
Bronwyn Carruthers graduated from the University of Waikato with a BSc(Environmental Science) and LLB(First Class Honours) in 2000. She was admitted to the Bar later that year. Ms Carruthers joined Simpson Grierson as a Law Clerk in February 2000 and progressed to Senior Associate in what is now the Local Government and Environment team, gaining extensive litigation experience representing territorial local authorities in a wide range of Resource Management Act 1991 matters. In 2011 Ms Carruthers moved to Russell McVeagh and joined the partnership within the year, the first woman to join the partnership in her specialist area. Ms Carruthers continued to specialise in Resource Management Act matters, acting predominantly for infrastructure providers and corporate clients. After 7 years as a partner, Ms Carruthers joined the independent bar at Shortland Chambers in December 2018 to practice as a planning, environment and local government specialist and has acted for a broad range of clients. She has also been the Editor of the Resource Management Journal since 2018 and Convenor of the New Zealand Law Society Environmental Law Committee since 2017.
