Profile

Leo has particular expertise in regulatory litigation and complex commercial disputes.  He is an experienced advocate across all levels, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, as well as the District and Family Courts and numerous successful mediations.

Prior to joining Shortland Chambers, Leo was a partner at Meredith Connell, responsible for conducting civil litigation under the Commerce Act 1986, Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003, and Fair Trading Act 1986, affording Leo extensive experience in competition and consumer protection law.  

Leo has particular expertise under Part 2 of the Commerce Act 1986, having acted for the Commerce Commission in numerous cases alleging cartel conduct, including in the leading Supreme Court decision Lodge v Commerce Commission [2020] NZSC 25 on the application of the price fixing provisions of the Commerce Act.  He has presented on multiple occasions overseas at International Competition Network workshops on the topic, as well as at CLPINZ conferences.

Leo also conducts a wide range of commercial litigation, including shareholder disputes under s 174 Companies Act 1993, joint venture and contractual disputes, and has conducted estate litigation in both the High and Family Courts.

Leo is a former Crown Prosecutor, having conducted both jury and judge-alone trials in the criminal jurisdiction.  

Leo holds degrees from the University of London (London School of Economics and Political Science – LLM), and the University of Auckland (BA,LLB(Hons); BA(Hons)).
