General Background
Ian attended Victoria University of Wellington where he obtained an LLB,
graduating in 1971. He was admitted to the Supreme Court of New Zealand (now
the High Court) in 1972. He was a partner in the law firm Shieff Angland, at
Auckland, from 1978 to 1995. During that period he was the senior litigation
partner responsible for the administration and supervision of a strong
litigation department.
Ian provides advocacy and advisory services to a wide range of clients
within his areas of practice. He has been instructed both as counsel in
litigation and for opinion work. He has experience appearing before almost
every Court in New Zealand.
Ian moved to the independent bar becoming a Barrister Sole in 1995. He has
been a member of Shortland Chambers since that date.

Ian is a member of the New Zealand Bar Association, the New Zealand Law
Society and the Auckland District Law Society. He has been an active
representative on committees for over 30 years. Most recently he has been the
Chairman of the Auckland District Law Society Disciplinary Tribunal.
